Rwanda weather in the east

Akagera lies in the east of Rwanda, in the rain shadow of the western highlands. Rain there varies a lot from place to place and from year to year, so treat every month as a tendency, not a promise. Akagera is also a comparatively warm region of Rwanda.

Many visitors choose November to April, when the landscape is green. Tracks are easier to use in the longer dry season from June to mid September. Both can be right, because they answer different questions. If you drive yourself, read our Akagera safari guide as well.

Best time to visit Akagera by purpose

Pick the month by what you want to do.

Game drives on your own

June to mid September gives the easiest tracks. In the rainy seasons, plan for four-wheel drive and for slower driving. Regular daytime hours are 06:00 to 18:00. Fees are on the park fees page.

Boat trips on Lake Ihema

Boat trips start at 07:30, 09:00, 15:00 and 16:30. A Lake Ihema boat trip is mainly a choice between a morning departure and a sunset one, not between months.

Short trips from Kigali

A day visit is easier in the dry months, because wet tracks slow you down. See the day trip from Kigali for timings.

For most visitors, June to mid September is the easiest choice, with the November to April months a good second option if you prefer green landscapes and do not mind rain on some days. Plan Rwanda beyond Akagera with the best time for Rwanda, or look at Nyungwe's seasons if you add the forest.
