Rwamagana and Kayonza in the Eastern Province

Rwamagana and Kayonza are both districts in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The provincial administration sits in Rwamagana, and Kayonza lies east of the Rwamagana district. Each name belongs to both a district and a town. The population figures below are for whole districts, not for the towns.

Neither place is a fixed tourist stop on the way to the park, and neither is a park entrance. They matter to a trip because of the road, the bus corridor and the way guides are taken back. If you are planning the drive, read Kigali to Akagera first, and if you would rather leave the driving, look at the Akagera day trip from Kigali.

Role for park visitorsNeighbouring district to the west of KayonzaOn the intercity bus corridor; where a guide returns after a northern exit

For most visitors, Kayonza is the name that matters, because it is on the bus corridor from Kigali and is where a guide returns after a northern exit. Rwamagana is more useful as a place to understand the Eastern Province and Lake Muhazi.

Lake Muhazi and Lake Mugesera

Lake Muhazi and Lake Mugesera in the Rwamagana district matter for tourism and for the local economy. For a visitor, they are a landscape to know about, not a booked activity. Ask locally about prices, opening times and swimming places before you plan to visit the shore or take a boat.

Lake Muhazi is a different scene from the open savanna of the park. If you add it to your trip, treat it as a separate outing from Akagera.

Kayonza: bus corridor and guide return

Two reasons the name appears in park planning.

The intercity corridor

An intercity bus corridor runs from Nyabugogo in Kigali through Kayonza to Nyagatare, so public transport does run on this road. It does not mean a bus goes into the park, and there is no direct bus from Kigali to a park gate.

Guide return after a north exit

If you drive from the south to the north with a guide and leave through the northern exit, the guide has to get back. Kayonza is the return point, with a transport cost of at most 5,000 RWF from the northern gate to Kayonza. A night at Karenge for the guide costs a further 20,000 RWF.

What to arrange

Plan the last stretch between the bus or the road and the gate yourself, with a car, a driver or a trip that includes transport. The accommodation page shows where you can stay inside the park.

Staying in the towns

If you want to sleep outside the park, check availability and travel time before you book. A day visitor from outside the park pays entry on each day.

Using Rwamagana and Kayonza in your plan

A short checklist.

Start from Kigali and allow 2 to 2.5 hours to the southern gate of the park. Treat Rwamagana and Kayonza as reference points on the way east, not as stops with set opening times. Check that the roads suit your car, since the park advises four-wheel drive in the rainy season. Read about the seasons on the weather and best time page.

Rwamagana and Kayonza: frequently asked questions

Where are Rwamagana and Kayonza?

Both are districts in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. Kayonza lies east of the Rwamagana district.

Is Kayonza the entrance to Akagera?

No. Kayonza is not a park gate. It is the place where a guide returns after a northern exit, and a stop on the intercity bus corridor.

How many people live in Rwamagana and Kayonza?

At the 2022 census, the Rwamagana district had 484,953 people and the Kayonza district 457,156. These are district figures, not the size of the towns.

What is Lake Muhazi?

A lake in the Rwamagana district. Together with Lake Mugesera it matters for tourism and for the local economy.

Is there a bus from Kayonza to the park?

An intercity bus corridor runs from Nyabugogo through Kayonza to Nyagatare. A bus into the park or to a gate is not part of it, so plan the last stretch yourself.
