Akagera day trip from Kigali: how it works
Akagera lies 110 km from Kigali, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road each way. The park is open to day visitors daily until 18:00. A day trip is possible because the park offers day visits, but the drive, the entry formalities, the game drive and a boat trip all need time. A day trip from Kigali to Akagera does not fit every activity into one day.
You can go in your own or a rented vehicle, with a driver, or on a tour that starts in Kigali. This page shows how the hours add up and what the day costs. Prices are for 2026 and the 2026โ2027 tariff. For the road itself, see the getting there page.

How the hours of an Akagera day trip add up
Planning figures, not a timetable.
| Part of the day | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Drive from Kigali | 2 to 2.5 hours | Each way; traffic can add time on the way back |
| Self-drive game drive | 06:00 to 18:00 | Daily hours for day visitors |
| Park vehicle, half day | 06:30 to 11:30 or 12:00 to 17:00 | With driver and guide, picked up in the south |
| Boat trip on Lake Ihema | About 1 hour | Starts at 07:30, 09:00, 15:00 or 16:30 |
| Return to Kigali | 2 to 2.5 hours | Travel advice recommends driving between towns by day |
For most visitors, one game drive plus one boat trip is a full day once the drive is counted. Choose a morning drive and a daytime boat trip, or a midday start and the 15:00 boat, and leave the park in time for daylight on the road. A full south to north crossing does not fit into a day trip, and the night drive does not fit either. For these, stay in the park. See where to stay.
What an Akagera day trip costs
Per person or per vehicle, 2026โ2027 tariff.
An example day
An international adult alone in a car pays $100 for entry and $10 to $40 for the vehicle, which makes $110 to $140 before a guide, a boat trip, transport and food. This is the sum of entry and vehicle fee, not an extra charge.
Add a guide or a boat
A guide for your own car costs $25 for half a day and $40 for a full day. A scheduled boat trip is $35 for an adult and $20 for a child by day, and $45 and $30 at sunset. A park vehicle with driver and guide costs $200 for half a day or $350 for a full day for up to 7 guests.
Paying at the park
Entry can be paid on arrival. The park takes MTN MoMo, DPO, bank transfer and Visa or Mastercard. Activities are booked through the park reception, which sends an invoice or an online payment link and confirms after payment.
If your tour or driver does not include park fees, add them. Check the vehicle fee as well: it ranges from $10 to $40 for a car, depending on where the car is registered. Every rate is on the park fees page.
Getting to the park from Kigali
The ways to reach the southern gates.
Most day trips use a car or a tour vehicle on the road from Kigali to the southern part of the park. Self-drivers enter through a southern gate, the Giraffe Gate or the Mutumba Gate, so ask your driver or the reception which one to use on your day. Public buses run on the Nyabugogo to Kayonza corridor, but that does not take you into the park. The towns on the road east are on the page about Rwamagana and Kayonza. In the rainy season the park advises a 4x4.
If you want more time with the animals than a day gives you, a night inside the park changes the plan. The entry fee for the second and third night is half the base rate. See the safari page for the game drive options.
