Kigali to Akagera by road
There is no airport at Akagera. Most visitors fly into Kigali and drive east. The distance from Kigali is 110 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the gate, so add time for traffic and rain. If you would rather not drive, a guided trip is the easier way, see Akagera day trip from Kigali.
The park advises four-wheel drive in the rainy season. The regular day visit runs from 06:00 to 18:00. Travel advice from the German Foreign Office is to drive long distances by day, so do not plan to reach Kigali late at night.

Ways to reach Akagera compared
Pick by how much you want to drive yourself.
| Option | Starts from | What to know |

| Own or rented car | Kigali | Most flexible; 110 km, about 2 to 2.5 hours; four-wheel drive in the rainy season |
| Guided day trip or transfer | Kigali | No driving; ask what the price includes |
| Airport taxi | Kigali Airport (KGL) | Taxi stands outside arrivals, available around the clock |
| Intercity bus to Kayonza | Nyabugogo, Kigali | Public transport on the Nyabugogo to Kayonza corridor; it does not run into the park |
| Helicopter | Check with the park | Scheduled or charter flights may be possible; ask for days, times and prices |
For most visitors, driving yourself or taking a guided trip is the simplest choice. Take the bus only if you are comfortable arranging the last stretch to the park yourself, since there is no direct public bus to the gate.

Taxi and transfer from Kigali Airport (KGL)
The first step for most visitors.
Taxis wait at marked stands outside the arrivals hall. They are available 24 hours a day, for Kigali and for other places in Rwanda. Agree the price and the destination before you get in. A transfer straight to the park is a long ride, so many visitors spend a night in Kigali first. Our Rwanda guide to Kigali covers the city, and Rwanda travel tips cover money, visas and health.
Visitors can enter on a visa on arrival in 2026, with a standard tourist visa at $50 for 30 days. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months. Citizens of some countries do not pay, so check your nationality.
Car rental and parking
Self drive is allowed in the park.
Driving in Rwanda
Traffic drives on the right. The German Foreign Office advises carrying an international driving licence together with your national one. Avoid long trips at night.
The southern gates
Self-drivers enter through a southern gate, the Giraffe Gate or the Mutumba Gate, so ask which one to use when you book. You can also leave the park in the north.
Vehicle fee, not a parking fee
Cars and minibuses pay $10 to $40 and buses $20 to $100 in the 2026 to 2027 tariff, depending on where the vehicle is registered. Ask which rate applies when you book. The vehicle fee is an entry charge, not a parking price.
A guide in your car
A guide for self-drivers costs $25 for half a day and $40 for a full day. A drive from the south to the north that ends at the northern exit counts as a full guide day. The guide's return to Kayonza has to be arranged.
As an example, an international adult with a car pays $100 entry plus $10 to $40 for the vehicle, which makes $110 to $140 before a guide, boat trip, transport and food. Check the current amounts before you travel, and see the park fees for the full table. Book a rental car ahead and ask the company whether it suits park tracks.
Rwamagana and Kayonza on the way
The towns on the road east.
Rwamagana and Kayonza are districts in the Eastern Province, with Kayonza east of Rwamagana. An intercity bus corridor links Kigali and Kayonza, and Kayonza is where a guide returns after a northern exit. The exact route to a gate depends on which gate you use, so follow the directions the park gives you when you book. Read more in Rwamagana and Kayonza.
